When the soldiers arrived in France, they were accompanied by more than three dozen volunteer chaplains. These clergymen experienced all the horrors of war, shared all the privations of the common soldier, and earned the love and affection of their “boys.” Two died, several were gassed or wounded, and many were decorated by France and the United States for their heroism, yet their stories have been lost to history. Through extensive research in published and archival sources, as well as firsthand materials obtained from the families of several chaplains, Michael E. Shay brings to life the story of these valiant men—a story of courage in the face of the horrors of war and of extreme devotion to the men they served.

About the Author
Michael E. Shay is a Senior Superior Court Judge in Connecticut. He has had a lifelong interest in American history, particularly the story of the 26th “Yankee” Division in World War I. His previous books include Revered Commander, Maligned General: The Life of Clarence Ransom Edwards, 1859–1931 and A Civilian in Lawton’s 1899 Philippine Campaign: The Letters of Robert D. Carter, both published by the University of Missouri Press.

'Seasoned independent historian Shay gives us look at the rather neglected chaplaincy during the Great War. He opens with a chapter that ably summarizes the early history of the American military chaplaincy through the outbreak of the war, and the enormous expansion that took place as the U.S. entered the war. Shay then looks at the nearly 40 men who served as chaplains with the New England’s 26th Division, following them and their troops as they trained, crossed the seas, encountered a new and different culture, and went into the trenches. Whenever possible he uses their own words to help illustrate their service and the services they delivered to their troops, whether offering religious solace or lending a hand with the wounded or, on some rare occasions, plunging into the fighting. In many cases Shay is able to give us a quite full picture of the man involved, while in others he can only fill in some details, but he tries to carry the story of each man into the postwar years. Shay’s account not only gives us some unique glimpses of work of these chaplains but also reminds us of the remarkably ecumenical spirit to prevailed in the chaplaincy at the time, one which endured through the rest of the century, but seems now under some attack. "Sky Pilots" is an excellent read for anyone interested in the chaplaincy or in the Great War.'
