Very informative with simple, effective patterns

Dave Whitlock presents information about important foods for trout - insects, crustaceans, and bait fish. He covers each organism's life cycle and how it relates to trout feeding, then simple, effective patterns to represent the imporatant life stages. I particularly like the way Dave makes his patterns a good mix of realisim with impressionistic simplicity. Excellent book for both beginning and experienced tyers.

A great introduction fly fishing entomology

I picked up this book for about five and a half bucks for a co-worker who had just recently taken up fly fishing. I actually purchased this same book about fifteen years ago when I was just beginning to fly fish. This book really explains why you use certain kinds of flies at different times of the year, whether to use dry or wet flies and which colors to use. It is an excellent primer for understanding the life cycles of the trout's main diet, namely aquatic insects. I truly recommend this to anyone who fly fishes.

Understand the food and you understand most of the the fish's behavior. You will never fish your best until you understand the lifecycle of the bugs the Trout eat. I very much hate textbooks and hate their prices. However I will begrudgingly give this a good rating. This book will be one that is useful for all sorts of service industry establishments. Not just food and beverage. It's methods can be applied in various environments. I'll keep it on hand for reference. The companion website gives good worksheets for formulas and can also give you many business templates for almost anything you may need in the service industry. If you are getting started or need a refresher on the basics of running a business I would actually recommend this book.

About the Author
Pierre Bernac was born in Paris in 1988 and began studying singing at the age of 18. In 1935 his professional partnership with Poulenc was formed and lasted until 1959 when Bernac retired from the concert platform. He then devoted himself to teaching and giving masterclasses through Europe, USA and Canada. He died in 1979.

Essential reading for the Poulenc student

Pierre Bernac probably knew Francis Poulenc's songs better than anyone save the composer -- they had a working relationship that stretched across several decades, and Bernac personally premiered the lion's share of Poulenc's song output. This volume is Bernac's tribute to his friend and collaborator, and includes a useful biographical sketch with some amusing anecdotes, and a comprehensive survey of Poulenc's song output (though a few songs including the Eight Polish Songs, Fancy - Poulenc's only English language setting, from Shakespeare - and the Quatre chansons pour enfants are conspicuously missing). Each song includes complete texts and translations and Bernac's notes on composition, general mood and singer's motivation.

This book goes alongside Bernac's The Interpretation of French Song as essential reading for the serious devotee of French melodies. Must reading for anyone thinking about singing Poulenc's songs.

About the Author
Pamela A. Hays holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Hawaii, an M.S. in counseling from the University of Alaska, a B.A. in psychology from New Mexico State University, and a certificate in French from La Sorbonne in France. From 1987-88, she served as a National Institute of Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellow in geropsychology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. From 1989-2000, she worked as a core faculty member of the graduate psychology program at Antioch University Seattle. Her research has included work with Arab women in North Africa, and Vietnamese, Lao, and Cambodian refugees living in the U.S. She is coeditor of Culturally Responsive Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (APA Books, 2006) and her articles on couple therapy, older adults, multicultural and feminist issues have appeared in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, the Journal of Counseling and Development, the International Journal of Psychology, and Women and Therapy. She is a licensed clinical psychologist who currently lives in rural Alaska and works with Central Peninsula Counseling Services and the Kenaitze Tribe's Nakenu Family Center in Kenai. She serves as adjunct faculty for Antioch University Seattle, and conducts workshops internationally.

Great Non-Threatening Book that Deals w/ Handling Race

I'm a 4th year clinical psychology PhD candidate and I read this book in my Ethnicity in Clinical Theory & Practice course. I thought it was amazing. The author uses examples from very diverse racial/ethnic populations and I learned about cultures that aren't normally mentioned in psychology texts. Additionally, most of the White students in my class also enjoyed the book. The author had a way of talking about privilege without making them defensive and I feel she was able to truly reach them. I would recommend this book not just for courses that focus directly on race and ethnicity, bur for any course that is dealing with training service providers who will be working cross-racially or with minority clients.
