About the Author
Michael Shaara was born in Jersey City in 1928 and graduated from Rutgers University in 1951. His early science fiction short stories were published in Galaxy magazine in 1952. He later began writing other works of fiction and published more than seventy short stories in many magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and Redbook. His first novel, The Broken Place, was published in 1968. But it was a simple family vacation to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1964 that gave him the inspiration for his greatest achievement, the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Killer Angels, published in 1974. Michael Shaara went on to write two more novels, The Noah Conspiracy and For Love of the Game, which was published after his death in 1988.
Jeff Shaara is the New York Times bestselling author of A Chain of Thunder, A Blaze of Glory, The Final Storm, No Less Than Victory, The Steel Wave, The Rising Tide, To the Last Man, The Glorious Cause, Rise to Rebellion, and Gone for Soldiers, as well as Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure—two novels that complete the Civil War trilogy that began with his father’s Pulitzer Prize–winning classic, The Killer Angels. Shaara was born into a family of Italian immigrants in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and graduated from Florida State University. He lives again in Tallahassee.

Three outstanding books on the Civil War

Yes, these books are fiction, but they are all based on fact. Although the authors take some liberties with specific facts, most of the writing follows very closely to the actual events of the Civil War. When you read other "non-fiction" books on the Civil War, the accuracy of these books will be evident. If you liked Killer Angels, you will love Gods and Generals and the Last Full Measure. Jeff Shaara writes exactly like his father and completes the entire story of the Civil War. I couldn't put them down.

Excellent, excellent and excellent!

Several months ago I saw the movie "Gettysburg" based on Michael Saara's novel- The Killer Angels. Since I was deeply moved by the film I decided to buy the book. I couldn't put it down- it was even stronger that the film. M Saara didn't try to stick to one side of the story: he wrote it from the point of view of those who took part in the Civil War with no regard to the colour of their uniform. He portrays us the battles and the feelings of the soldiers from both camps in an intelligent and beautiful way and style. After his father's death, Jeff Saara decided to continue his work by writing two other books which all together make a wonderful and touching trilogy. The two novels written by Jeff are as good as 'The Killer Angels' and I would like to shake his hand and tell him how breathtaking and deeply human this trilogy is. Good work! Don't miss it!

Moving, inspirational, educational - a must read!

This trilogy has touched me like no other books based on historical events have. Knowing full-well that these books fictionalize certain aspects of the characters, they nonetheless stir the emotions and evoke sympathy equally for both sides. Based on the descriptions of the early part of the war, I felt exasperation for the inept decisions of the northern leaders; later, as the inevitable end approached, I ached for Lee and the suffering of the confederate soldiers. These books opened up issues that in my previous studies were depicted in much more black and white terms. By the stirring depictions of the actions and characters, myriad and complex social and economic issues are raised, many of which continue to be debated today. These books have inspired me to pursue additional studies in the Civil War. I highly recommend that they be read by every American; they provide an interesting and emotional baptism into the most pivotal period of our nation's history.
