A good guide but not without flaws

The guide is decent and helps you get through the game The World Ends With You. Includes an easy to follow walk-through as well as appendices to useful information about Threads, Noise database, Pin guide. Gives you information about the extra missions after you clear the game. I found the Pin guide most useful.

This guide is not with out a few flaws such as incorrect information about pin evolutions and stating repeatedly that certain pins come from "big" noise when it should have said "pig". Not a big deal though the guide in it's entirety is helpful and the flaws are easily spotted and don't affect your ability to play the game well.

I should also mention that the walk-through is only partially spoiler free. There are a few times when reading the walk-through will spoil a few story elements but it does keep some of the more important spoilers a secret.

As Great a Guide as the Game

"Someone's zetta slow!"
Anyone who has played through The World Ends With You knows where that quotation's from.
Anyway.

This guide is essential to the game for anyone who wants to get just about everything--like me. I found myself hardly playing the game without the book flopped open. It gives extensive details on all the pins, swag, and every other secret there is (especially after the initial ending).

The walkthrough is very well written and easy to follow, and it includes notes breached into passages that lets the player know when a good sidequest is readily available. Sometimes, though, the text can get a little exhaustive and give away too much information--information the player can just get from following the story. But that's just me; I like my guides to be simple and to the point, without giving away too many spoilers.

The only other gripe I have (I am nit-picky) is that the guide really doesn't explain the special moves for each character too well. I found myself playing through most of Shiki's story before I realized specials were racking up.
Nevertheless, the battle system is slightly difficult to explain, anyway; one must simply play through it to fully understand it.

Along with the guide, The World Ends With You has entered my list of favorite games, and, I believe, is one of the best (if not the) game for the DS.

Nicely organized guide

I love having lists of items for RPGs and this guide provides plenty. Details for clothing and buttons are very well laid out. The guide also provides a walkthrough for hte game but I have not used that enough to give a good opinion. If you like having details for items in RPGs then this is a great accessory to a terrific game.

Pioneering Study

This is the first work of which I know to look at 19th and 20th century architecture in a broad context, rather than the famous "war of styles." It is common now to speak of 'Victorian architecture' as opposed to 'Modern architecture,' but the idea that Victorian styles had more similarity than difference seems to have been put forward for the first time here. It also hints that the same is true for various flavors of Modernism, and indeed, that the two supposed antitheses are simply positions along a spectrum. This is done through a tightly limited survey of a very specific, though widespread type, the railroad station. If I recall correctly, there are some pictures, but the book is more of interest to historians and architectural theorists than to rail buffs.

Master of Accuracy Rifles

Col. Townsend Whelen wrote once; "Only accurate rifles are interesting".

Anyone interested in accurate rifles should have a copy of this timeless book by the original modern master of accuracy, which I've read and absorbed several times since its first introduction three decades ago. Warren Page's advice on accuracy may seem dated, but it's timeless. Anyone who owns an accurate rifle and shoots accurate ammunition of any sort owes a generous thanks to Warren Page, who was in virtually all regards the modern pioneer of accuracy, and the leading proponent of the calibers that were launched by his fertile imagination. More than that, he and his small band of accuracy nuts cultivated a new understanding of accuracy that lives today.

Most fans of the .223 Remington (5.56 NATO) have no idea that Warren Page was the reason that it came into being. From the .222 Remington that he helped inspire in 1950, the intrinsically accurate and slightly longer .222 Remington Magnum was spawned; each based on a small diameter case with a small rifle primer. Then along came Armalite with a need, and the ammo for it was there for the plucking. Alas, the bolt-action based case needed to be tweaked to feed reliably in an auto... A slight shortening of the neck, and a little squaring of the shoulder for efficient magazine feeding, and voila! The .223 Remington was born. No, the .222 Rem. and the .222 Rem. Mag. live on in their heritage, thanks to Warren Page's enthusiasm.

Warren Page's personal contribution to accuracy goes infinitely beyond the bench rest target. His efforts are replicated every time a Marine or Army sniper demands 1,000 yard accuracy, or every time a chuck shooter lays down a 450 yard shot with his out of the box sporter. That wasn't even thinkable 40 years ago with a varmint grade rifle! What we take for granted in terms of accurate military weapons these days is directly associated with bench rest shooting and the sorts of groups they demanded. Less than two decades ago, military competitors using military competition arsenal weapons and military competition arsenal ammunition were routinely out-classed by civilian shooters with their custom rifles and handloads... all the product of the lessons learned by wide-butted benchresters who took accuracy to unimaginable levels, and who thought "outside the box". He was instrumental in the development of the .308 Winchester, from which an entire line of accurate cartridges were developed... the .243 Winchester, the 7mm-08 Remington, etc., etc. Today, every shooter takes for granted the elementary concept of rigid barrels, rigid receivers, rigid stocks, and rigid scope mounting. He had an intimate understanding of barrel making design that revolutionized accuracy and made sub-minute groups from off-the-shelf guns something everyone now has a right to expect from a gun maker's cardboard box. Most shooters these days would snicker at a one-inch group. I'm here to tell you that famous magazine gun scribes for American Rifleman and every other gun magazine jumped for joy when they found a combination that would yield anything close to a minute of angle. Warren Page was a taskmaster when it came to accuracy, and was the leader of the nutty fringe element that carried his heart to the range in search of that one hole group that we now take for granted. The title of the book is absolutely on-target. If you have an accurate rifle and ammunition, I guarantee that you can trace them back to someone who read it once upon a time. To say that this book is for the bench rest community is to miss the point entirely. "The Accurate Rifle" was written with prophetic knowledge of things that were not always understood about the accurate rifles we now own. Have you got an accurate rifle? You owe it to yourself to know who was the quarterback behind the winning game.

Bench rest only

For the beginner or intermediate shooter there is much here. This is, however, almost entirely for the benchrest and target shooter, with very little for the varminter, tactical shooter, or hunter.
The book opens with the history of benchrest shooting, and discusses the development and origins of the sport. Again, I would not consider this much use to anyone other than the dyed in the wool bench rester, although it is interesting for all. There is a reasonably lengthy discussion of calibers which is largely obsolete- the .222 has been replaced by the PPC range of rounds.
There is some information that is of use to the general shooter, on such topics as wind and handloading for accuracy, although the experinced shooter will find little of use there.
So, all in all a worth while tome, although not benefical to many beyond benchresters.

I have been watching copies of this book, which was published in a very modest quantity, selling at auction in New Orleans for about $1,200.00 now that Mr. Hays has died. The drawings and photgraphs are presented in the casual, uncalculated, genteel manner with which most EVERYTHING is done in the Delta and Louisiana. You'ld never come away from his houses and think " Looks like the decorator JUST LEFT!!".Nothing is contrived or 'studied' too closely. It all appears as if the whole flavor and spirit of the Hays house just grew/developed over the years even if the house still smells of fresh paint. I was building a house modelled after the Simmons-Edwards house in Charleston, S.C. and was just MAD for the brick floors in the Hays houses..Nervy lad that I am, I called him up one Saturday and told him about how I got one of his books and that I needed his secret recipe for making those glazed, blackish bricks. He told me EVERYTHING. Southern Gentleman par excellance!. Don't bother to ask for the recipe//I no longer give it out..Ingrateful folks beg for years and when I give them the info, NOT EVEN A SIMPLE THANK-YOU…I don't have to put up with that sort of bad manners..

Chris Seibold is an engineer, writer, and cartoonist residing in Knoxville, Tennessee. As an engineer, he has tackled such diverse processes as powder coating and hot dog casing manufacture. As a writer, he has focused on computing and written for a variety of online and traditional media, including serving as Senior Contributing Editor for the Apple Matters web site and contributing hacks to iPod and iTunes Hacks, with a talent for making the complex accessible to the interested but harried user. As a cartoonist, he has produced both cartoon strips and editorials. Chris also managed to spend some time working producing radio shows relating to sports. As soon as he hits television, the trifecta will be complete. Chris lives with his wife, young son, and what is quite possibly the world's dimmest canine. He has a degree in Physics from the University of Tennessee but has yet to find work involving frictionless inclined planes.

Mostly for Causal Users

Chris Seibold covers some interesting topics in this work. I agree with other reviews that I have seen in that potential buyers need to look at the Table of Contents and see the list of projects and if they are interesting enough for one to purchase. For example, since I prefer software, most of Chapter 11 about hardware are not likely projects that I would complete. I have no desire to dye my Mac but some users might find it exciting. This book is not specific to Macs completely. Subjects like using Tor and setting up your router are general topics that apply to various setups. I did enjoy learning more about PLIST and how to quit Finder and were items that I completed right as I read the book. I think that looking at the entire book-it is more about how to customize your setup and helps get you to think about making your workspace more enjoyable and moving beyond default settings if a user desired. Advanced computer users (in general) might not find much in this book,; however, newer Mac users or causal users might like this work in getting them more familiar with customizing their setups.

Overall conclusion: This work is for users looking for fun more than anything in my opinion.

Something For Everyone

I am not an OS X Power User so a lot of the Hacks in this book were new to me and very useful. Depending on your knowledge and interests this book could be really fun and useful or filled with information you already know or don't care about.

I was particularly interested in a lot of the security-related content. The book helped me create a backup, bootable flash drive, patition my drive nondestructively, and copy the Mountain Lion installer to a flash drive. I then encrypted a USB Drive to protect my sensitive files. I also optimized my wifi and double-checked the security. All of these items were hacks in the book and something I hadn't done before in OS X.

I haven't tried it yet, but one hack mentions turning your Mac into a DVR, which would be very fun and useful, too. I'm saving that for another weekend.

I recommend looking at the table of contents before buying, because all the hacks are listed in it. The list will tell you whether the book is worth buying or not. I found the procedures easy to follow, but I have done a lot of these hacks on a PC so that probably helped me on the Mac. If you're pretty comfortable in OS X, I don't think you'll have a problem.

Your springboard for the curious-minded

A smorgasbord cookbook of recipes to help you get the most of your mac, Mac Hacks helps the novice-to-middle level users tweak their machines to be more automative, customised to his or her needs. Chris Seibold adds that link for the average user, to become more of a power-user, and inspire the reader to look beyond the book for similar hacks, in quest of his or her environment-setup utopia.

The book starts by encouraging the user to backup his or her computer, because as you know, hacks don't always turn out the way they should, so protecting one's computer and being able to revert to the initial state is ideal. So okay, having done that, the user also provides information on creating a flash backup and various other handy utility tricks, to get your computer and your account manageable.

The second chapter is where the tasty part of the book commences, and the chapter is Lion OS specific, but provides ways to manage the general user experiences, from making the notification less intrusive, to other sorts of Lion-specific quirks that you haven't come to appreciate, moving into from Mountain Lion.

The following chapter gets into less OSX-version specific tasks, from tweaking one's browser, adding/removing flash, tweaking various networking settings, playing around with how icons look on your desktop, and plenty more. Chapter 5 moves to the automation section of the book, using Apple's in-built Automator tool, to allow for orchestration of files from your desktop, to be moved automatically to certain designated folders, to making iTunes work in a more fluid process. The author then looks at some `Unix Fun', which albeit is probably too advanced for some novice readers, but provides some informative stuff for the rest of us, looking to move to the next stage of hacking. With some Unix trickery, one could tweak how the dock looks, how certain effects like the glass effect show. Chapter 7 then talks about security, and ways of securing one's computer beyond the standard default.

The later chapters deal with more advanced software and hardware hacks, from getting your computer to recognise you, to giving your computer a polycarbonate dye bath, or turning your macbook into a tablet, which is certainly not for the light-hearted guys.

In total, over 52 hacks, not everything will be for everyone, but structured in an easy-to-follow and non-dependent, non-sequential way to cherry pick the hacks that suite you. I found some interesting tips in the Unix section, but certainly a book you would want to keep and reference when you need to complete a certain goal, but more importantly, this book is only a start. It will encourage you to take different paths, from learning more about Unix, to finding your own terminal-tips for tweaking certain other aspects of your environment.

I found the book to be concise and well written, succinct and relevant, but for the niche folks who want to add some personality to their macs.

This is Brian Carruthers 3rd book written and in my opinion his most important book to date. If you've ever struggled with making or keeping money this book will help you on a conscious level and help you reprogram your unhealthy subconscious programing so that you can start to receive abundance and build your wealth that will be sustainable.
