This volume provides a history of the most consequential 35mm motion picture camera introduced in North America in the quarter century following the Second World War: the Arriflex 35. It traces the North American history of this camera from 1945 through 1972―when the first lightweight, self-blimped 35mm cameras became available.

Chronicle of a Camera emphasizes theatrical film production, documenting the Arriflex’s increasingly important role in expanding the range of production choices, styles, and even content of American motion pictures in this period. The book’s exploration culminates most strikingly in examples found in feature films dating from the 1960s and early 1970s, including a number of films associated with what came to be known as the “Hollywood New Wave.” The author shows that the Arriflex prompted important innovation in three key areas: it greatly facilitated and encouraged location shooting; it gave cinematographers new options for intensifying visual style and content; and it stimulated low-budget and independent production. Films in which the Arriflex played an absolutely central role include Bullitt, The French Connection, and, most significantly, Easy Rider. Using an Arriflex for car-mounted shots, hand-held shots, and zoom-lens shots led to greater cinematic realism and personal expression.

Pope is an oddity, an academic who illuminates the story of a camera he uses and loves. The Arriflex II allowed cinematographers and directors to work on location, telling stories outside of Hollywood’s sound stage production formulas and practices. From the end of World War II until the late 1970s, these artists created a film counterculture that was a worthy artistic competitor to the European cinema. That counterculture in turn provided heroes for a film school generation that wanted to believe that independent and personal cinema is possible in America. Europeans knew the Arri was tough, reliable, portable, and affordable. How it enabled our own new waves in America, despite industry opposition, is a story Pope tells accurately and readably. Chronicle of a Camera should be essential reading for anyone interested in how independent narrative cinema became a reality in the United States.”

An Amazing story of Arri Camera in North America

Where do you start? An amazing well written book by my friend Norris Pope, scholar and filmmaker. In chapter 6 he writes about how Roger Corman is shooting, "The Young Racers" with Arri Cameras. A quote from the book: "...one of which was often operated by Francis Ford Coppola-who has been hired to record sound..." I get a kick out of the thought Francis Ford Coppola as a sound guy. Anyway, many more interesting stories in the book.

I wish I had time to say more, but I just needed to drop a note and say how impressed I was by this book. I learned so much, and the writer manages a lot of technical details with clear and engaging writing. I never thought a technical history would be so artistically insightful or fun to read.

Book is on TESTING strategies, not BUILDING strategies!

I have to give this 3 stars because it is badly mistitled. The correct title of this book should be "Testing Algorithmic Trading Systems" because that is exactly what the book is all about. There is virtually nothing in the book about BUILDING algorithmic trading systems (winning or otherwise), or providing ideas on how to build a WINNING strategy (such as a discussion of successful approaches to trade entries, exits, managing trades in the areas of stop losses, profit stops, trailing stops, etc. ... all of which combine to make a "winning" system).

If you are interested in discussions of how to actually build winning trading systems this is not the book for you as it is devoid of any such information. But if you already have strategy ideas and want to learn more about how to test them thoroughly then that is what this book is all about, and it is very easy to read and follow. I'd give it 4 stars if it was titled correctly.

Destined to become a algorithmic classic

I recently purchased Building Algorithmic Trading Systems: A Trader's Journey From Data Mining to Monte Carlo Simulation to Live Trading (Wiley Trading) I found the book to be very detailed and true to its title.

This book is a comprehensive look at the authors logical and honest comprehensive approach to algorithmic trading. I say logical because even the rank beginner to the experienced trader can learn from his logical stepwise approach. This isn't a book that bogs the reader down with mathematical formulas but clearly illustrates important concepts that must be understood to follow the authors thought process.

What i appreciate are the clear lessons learned that are shared throughout the book. I find it rare that someone of his caliber( he is someone you can at least attempt to do due diligence on, a real algorithmic trader with verifiable multi-year experience with his own real money accounts generating over 100% annual returns ) would share not only his success but also his many failures that led to his growth and development as a trader.

I found this a breath of fresh air given the number of books and educational content produced by people who flat out don't trade real money or hide the fact that they are so confident in their methods that all they can do is trade sim instead of real money and have a multitude of excuses of why they don't have any verifiable performance yet can talk a good sales game selling you on their confidence in their methods.

Well back to the book. It is my belief that if one applies the lessons learned that one can develop good trading system development habits that can increase the odds of finding and deploying a system that has a chance of surviving the markets and by studying the lessons learned potentially saving thousands of dollars in the process of becoming a successful systematic trader. Unfortunately some of the readers like myself will recognize many of the school of hard knocks lessons learned the hard and expensive way.

The book is surprisingly complete covering the development process in detail with very good illustrations to the real world monitoring process and illustrates several scenarios that every automated algorithmic trader is likely to face. Throughout the book the tone is helpful and positive with the author taking the attitude" this is what I have that works for me ( with thorough explanation of his thought process) your standards/requirement may be different and that's ok"

I think this book is a must read for all algorithmic traders and those who have yet to find their algorithmic approach

The Next Level Trading Step

Excellent read for those interested in taking their beginning or intermediate level trading systems to the next level. Whether you choose to follow Mr. Davey's current methodology or develop your own, this is an excellent source book to build from. Better yet, the disciplined reader can develop their own trading systems, based on information the author's discusses in great detail about his proven trading system approaches and system development's. Great book..!!..

Lean Sigma

We have been on the lean journey for over 4 years, and just started on 6 sigma. I have completed course work for a black belt and need to complete the project. This is just to provide a basic reference for my comments. (Update: 7 years lean & 6 sigma black belt)

The book is good and technically accurate. It is written by a consultancy, with a not totally overt message to hire them. They do not go in to the detailed nuts and bolts of 6 sigma or lean. If that is what you want, look elsewhere. They do discuss both, with more on lean than six sigma. Heavy emphasis on change management and leadership involvement (as it should be).

They have their angle on approach, which seems the case with most consultants (everyone has their flavor), but it is not out of line with the orthodoxy of either discipline.

The best benefit is how they integrate both disciplines. This integration was not an overt display with in the book, and that maybe intentional.
There is a line of thinking that Lean and 6 Sigma are two sides of the same coin, or a ying and yang to continuous improvement. The authors seem to go down this road. They take a project management approach, and in project definition try to decide if this is a 6 sigma or lean project. It wasn't crystal clear what they do if it is blended. My take away is that you blend your approach. This may mean spin-off projects from the main project or a longer total duration as you work through the lean and 6 sigma issues.

It is worth getting and reading. The DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) is better done elsewhere. Lean sigma is relatively new, so expect more books on different approaches. I like the integrated approach, pick the dominant theme and use those tools. Address issues as they come up. Move the ball. I like what one instructor told me about both.... "I can do Lean without 6 sigma, but not 6 sigma without Lean." By that he meant there are tools in Lean that only help clear the clutter for 6 sigma, like 5-s & standard work (work place organization and housekeeping).

Don't ignore Six Sigma - it may save your company

Don't let a luke-warm review of this book distract you from the value of Six Sigma, which I'll presume that you are at least interested in. I'll try and save you some time.
CEO
If you are a CEO, and have not yet been adequately introduced to Six Sigma, I recommend first purchasing "The Power of Six Sigma" (ISBN 0793144345, also available in audio CD). Once complete, consider purchasing this book ("Lean Six Sigma"). Read at least the first three chapters, which focus on contributions to the bottom line. If hooked, continue.
"The Power of Six Sigma" gives an overview, and the first section of Michael George's book illustrates why this is important to you.
Grunt
If your are "in the trenches," follow the above steps, but focus on chapters 10 and 15 of "Lean Six Sigma." Between you and I, the most compelling parts of Michael George's book was the second covering the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) process (chap. 10), also available many places on the web, and the very last chapter, where the author talks about how Six Sigma applies in the product development world (chap. 15, which I found fascinating).
Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of the Six Sigma methodology, but was often times quite frustrated by this book. When I wanted more detail on tools within the Six Sigma framework I found myself completing the Yellow Belt course through Moresteam.com. This book simply does not cover the tools within the DMAIC framework in a level of detail I consider adequate.
Many times I found myself laughing because I am not in fact the CEO of this company. She has already committed to Six Sigma, and we therefore have little choice. After getting into the meat of the methodology, even after early involvement in TQM and other efforts, I am quite impressed with this latest evolution.

Shareholder Value as a function of quality and process time

This book aims at calculating shareholder value improvements as a function of quality improvements and process lead time improvements. The basic idea is absolutely right, however, the framework presented in the book is quite shallow, as it seems to target a wider audience, and therefore annoys those in search of truly scientific solutions.
My sceptical rating is based on the following observations:
(1) Mr Georges framework for Shareholder Value-Calculation is grossly simplified and often faulty.
Example: EVA is NOT equal to (ROIC - WACC) as Mr George says, but EVA = Invested Capital * (ROIC - WACC)
Anybody with a real understanding of EVA will rip this book apart
(2) Mr Georges idea, that process time minimization and quality improvements are complementary goals, which one must solve simultaneously, is not new. The Boston Consulting Group did present the same idea in a much better book (STALK 'Competing on time' 1990) about 12 years ago. BCG based their ideas on a system dynamics model (experience curves). Mr George adds six sigma, but fails to capture the analytical insights one can study in 'Competing on Time'.
(3) The book does contain some valuable 'hands-on-lessons', but they get lost in the otherwise wordy,shallow book
(4) This book is written in a colloquial, flowery sales-person style, which annoys the educated reader. It switches from shallow facts to anecdotes, quotations from gurus, and value judgements. The few valuable hands-on-lessons often get lost in a swamp of marketing-speak.
SUMMARY: This is a 'consulting-fad-article-blown-up-into-a-business-book'-Textbook.In comparison with other popular business books it is still acceptable, but hardly deserves the label scientific.

Raul is worse than Fidel

I read this book after reading "Los Funerales de Castro. Both books worth reading if one has an interest in Cuba and the Brothers Castro. I am not a totally fluent Spanish reader but this book not hard to read if one has a Spanish Dictionary for some key words not understood. "La Pulga Que Cabalgó Al Tigre" also by vincente Botin reads like a mystery novel. (Sadly this is no concocted story) It is the truth about two brothers who have destroyed a nation for personal ambition. I have now lent my copy to many Cubans who tell me that they learned so much about the two brothers that they never knew and certainly was not revealed to them while living in Cuba.

I wish the book would be translated into English so that Americans would have a better understanding of the land, and people and the cruel dictatorship that is present only 90 miles from Florida.

I read the book in a day and can say that, by a mile, this is the best Jules Verne book I've read! His two most famous works, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" are unjustly better known than some of his other works, equally good in their own right. The characters are well developed, interesting, entertaining, and the pace keeps you reading. It follows a young woman, her two eccentric uncles, and two suitors on a chase to see the Green Ray, that flash that occurs at a clear sunset over the ocean. Set in Scotland (Helensburgh, Oban and Staffa Island), it is clear that while Jules Verne may have visited these places, he was a Frenchman and not a Highlander, but it does not detract from the entertainment value of the book.
