Rich and Deadly

This is a three in one review on the truly splendid books, Warrior, Weapon, and Battle. Or more formally: Warrior, A visual History of the Fighting Man. Weapon, A visual History of Arms and Armor. Battle, A visual Journey through 5000 Years of Combat.

They can be reviewed together because of their kinship in sharing the same visual concept and the same supremely expert author, R. G. Grant. No pilgrim, Grant is the author of over 20 books, most on the subject of conflict, implements of war and the fighting man.

All three books are wonderfully delicious for those of us whose DNA inclines us toward the history of arms, armament and the men who have carried them. These books are chock full of photographs, charts, maps and illustrations on every page to beautifully compliment and expand upon a tightly written, no fluff text. And this text is extremely well researched.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I must confess that I have not read each of these three books in their entirety. I've had them for only 2 weeks and after scanning them from start to finish, I am now devouring them slowly, page by page, like a monk with a holy book, meting out tasty morsels judiciously. I want this to last a long time.

Although, the books overlap to a degree, they are not repetitious in any negative way as they each have their own exclusive focus.

Warrior takes on the subject of the individual fighting man from 600 BCE to the present, from the Greek Hoplite, the Samurai, Zulu, Mongol bowman, American rifleman to the modern western infantry and special forces...and almost everything in between.

Weapon focuses on just about every kind of implement of a fighting man's arsenal of killing tools from Assyrian spears to the AK 47. In some cases, replicas have been photographed but mostly it's the often crusty, old real thing. The photography is first rate. As in all three books, the text and illustrations are intermingled in such an artful way as to make each page a visual smorgasbord.

Battle covers the first recorded major battle which is between the Canaanites and the Egyptians at Meiddo and takes us through conflicts in every age all the way to modern times. Its focus is on the Generals, the strategies, the troops and their weapons.

Battle was published by DK in 2005, Weapon in `05 and Warrior in `07. Highly recommended, all three.

An excellet historical reference

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in military conflict through the centuries. It covers all of the major battles and more that occurred. In particular I like the way that it provides some historical background to the acutal battles.

Short and punchy summaries of the battles just add to the attraction of the book. Lavished throughout with excellent maps and colour photos and illustrations this book is a must have for any military library.

Do yourself a favour and buy it.

Great format and summary of the major battles in history!!

There are two main reasons why I liked this book and why you should get it if you are a true history buff:
1. The format (like most DK books) is very well organized with just the right amount of text and pictures, without making one fall asleep.

2. Unlike most general history books that are written in English, this book does not assume that Europe is the only region that matters in the history of the world. As a kid growing up in the US, I am quite frankly sick of reading about only Europe and ....Rome! The author(s) did a great job of covering major battles that affected the history of nations all over the world, including Asia, Africa, and South America (not only in Europe or ROME!). For example, not many western history buffs will even know of the major invasions (millions died) that took place in Korea by Japan in the 1590s, but this book does justice to it by dedicating more than one full page to it (with pictures!).

I ordered this book as soon as I saw it in the bookstore. It's a great nighttime read for browsing and learning about battles that history has "put aside". Great job!

About the Author

Jessica Stern is a research professor at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies and a Fellow at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard’s School of Public Health. She served on the Clinton administration’s National Security Council Staff. She is the author of Denial: A Memoir of Terror; Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year); and The Ultimate Terrorists. 

J. M. Berger is a nonresident fellow with the Brookings Institution and the author of Jihad Joe: Americans Who Go to War in the Name of Islam, a critically acclaimed history of the American jihadist movement. He is a regular contributor to Foreign Policy magazine and his website, Intelwire.com, has published thousands of declassified documents on the September 11 attacks and the Oklahoma City bombing.

An important and authoritative exploration of the Islamic State

Among my frequent, and just as oft dismissed, complaints to my wife has been the lack of a scholarly work on the Islamic State. Jessica Stern and J.M. Berger have filled a significant void in the literature with their impressive and comprehensive offering, ISIS: The State of Terror (I loathe the poor translation this acronym represents, but the authors justify their use of it). Though a bit uneven in the middle, the book begins and ends powerfully and leaves the reader fully informed on the roots and history of the Islamic State (IS). Additionally, they offer a series of suggestions on countering the messaging of the self-styled Caliphate. The book is an impressive collection of sources that will enrich any reader who wants to understand and overcome the phenomenon represented by Al-Qaeda (AQ) and the IS.

The authors begin with the beheading of James Foley and subsequent shattering of the “jayvee” reputation of the IS and conclude the introduction with their explanation on the use of ISIS as the acronym throughout the book. Chapter One focuses on Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). The authors detail the humble and surprising beginnings of Zarqawi through his rise to power and pseudo-alliance with Al-Qaeda Central (AQC) in Afghanistan. The authors outline the ideology behind the group and its takfiri (declaring others apostates) ideology. AQI died with its creator and the IS rose from the ashes. Chapter Two chronicles the rise of the so-called state to include theological influences and the role of the Syrian conflict in solidifying the fledgling insurgency with dreams of claiming the mantle of Caliphate.

Chapter Three winds the clock back and details the rise of AQC after the end of the Russian efforts in Afghanistan. The chapter explores the divisions within the group as it expanded and the shifts in communication strategies, highlighting the significance of an American in ash-Shabab for taking the jihad to the online mainstream. Chapter Four focuses on the importance of foreign fighters in the proliferation of the IS, exploring the allure of the group for both genders. Chapter Five details the messaging efforts of AQC and the IS from initial forays into print to online efforts and the shift towards propaganda videos with their now-notorious execution scenes.

Chapters Six and Seven explore the significance of social networking tools in the proliferation of AQ and the IS from the early forum days to the current Twitterstorm. The authors note that suppression has been effective and that even more sophisticated methods may be on the horizon to stifle the groups’ ability to promulgate their message, noting the necessity for continuous efforts to “weed” the social networks. Chapter Eight details the rifts and power struggles between AQ and the IS concluding with the rise of “lone wolf” terrorist activities around the world. The book strays a bit in Chapter Nine into an exploration of evil itself, addressing such topics as beheadings, child soldiers, slavery, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Chapter Ten delves into the apocalyptic dreams and machinations of the IS to bring about the end times.

Chapter Eleven concludes the main portion of the book with the authors’ explanations of the importance of understanding the mindset of the leaders of the IS and the difficulty of fighting an ideology. The authors suggest that the focus must be on eliminating the illusions of simplicity the IS uses to paint the world in black and white while refusing to play into their apocalyptic fantasies. Stern and Berger insist that the IS state has well-defined, but vulnerable messaging that can be countered or suppressed to reduce their reach. The authors note the importance of the moral high ground and of carefully measuring calls for action against what we hope to accomplish. The authors conclude with their assertion that democracy cannot be forced, advocating a patient approach while noting the willingness of regional partners like Jordan to shoulder at least some of the load.

The book is fantastic. It is extremely well referenced and is as entertaining as it is informative. While some of the middle chapters seem like essays that were added to a work that could have stood without them, they do provide additional layers of fidelity on the nature of the IS and its meteoric rise into the world’s consciousness. The book fills a significant gap in the literature and will be important as we continue to study and understand the role of these dangerous movements. The appendices and notes sections are as enjoyable as the book itself, adding incredible levels of detail to the chapters. Historians, students of the region, and policy makers all could benefit from reading this book as well as anyone who wants to understand the complicated entity that is the Islamic State.

A Good Read with Useful Information and Analysis but not "Authoritative"

"ISIS: the State of Terror" is a good book about the hideous mutation of al-Qa'ida in Iraq that the so-called "Islamic State" happens to be. This said, I have to disagree with the sentiment of at least one other review-here here that it is an "authoritative" work about this murderous group. Rather, it is a book that is authoritative on certain aspects of ISIS:

-the ideology of the group is thoroughly detailed
-the millenarian aspects of the group as discussed in the book are very helpful and informative
-the social network "marketing strategy" of ISIS is exhaustively covered (almost too much)
-there is a very well-written appendix that will provide readers who do not know much about Islam and its relationship to this particular terrorist group with a good grounding about that topic.

One thing in particular I thought was thought provoking was the proposition that unlike al-Qa'ida, ISIS does not market itself as the avenger of the weak Islamic community (the "ummah"). Rather, ISIS presents itself and its "caliphate" in war-torn Syria and Iraq as an expression of Muslim strength and victory.

But like other reviewers have noted, the book lacks depth on a number of areas:

-There is little discussion of events on the battlefield...in particular, the stunning successes the group enjoyed in 2014.
-The book lacks substantive discussion of key personalities and leaders in ISIS apart from its self-proclaimed "caliph."
-The authors don't provide very much in the way of prescriptions for beating ISIS, although they seem to favor the idea of "containing the group" (probably with the expectation that if ISIS fails to expand, it will eventually fall apart)

One thing that struck me as rather jarring and dubious was the assertion that ISIS's minions engage in extreme acts of violence and cruelty in order to blunt their members and subjects' empathy. I can't help but think that it's other way around...that ISIS seeks to reduce empathy in order to enable atrocities and terror that it markets as a sign of its strength.

Bottom line: This is well-worth reading, but I think a reader will want to keep an eye out for the slew of other books about ISIS I imagine will be coming out in the next few years.

A good solid primer for ISIS focused on the online aspects

This book will be informative for those seeking to come up to speed on ISIS. The authors are challenged in citing source material for the book because all the phenomena mentioned occur in social media. That being said, the authors do occasionally refer to experts in the field of terrorism to explain some aspects of ISIS. The book is heavily footnoted, indexed, and referenced; this consumes almost half the text. Due to the requirements of publishing, the book stops about December of 2014. The book spends little time on the human geography of the area or explanations of the forces interacting in the area. More time is spent explaining and focusing on the group, its movements, and effects.

Disappointing book.

I was expecting a book showing the best of the braids and new knots for braided and gelspun lines. There was very little new information in this book. The only new knot was his own and a lot of the book sounded like an ad for a line brand that he is an investor in.
The last quarter of the book is a fishing name dropping marathon which proves nothing.
Than he goes on to name the types of fish that he has caught in his career.
The author does a lot of rambling and goes off the subject on tangents at a moments notice.
I would not recommend the book.

It's official - I am a fan of Ms. Bene

Having read and enjoyed "the Rite" and really, really, really enjoyed "The Invitation", I was looking forward to reading Ms. Bene's longer works in the Thalia series. The book opens with a warning about the subject matter being dark. Not easily spooked or faint of heart, I thought, "OK, sure". Turns out, the warning is serious. This is dark. This is extremely intense, and I would even go so far as to say it was emotionally harrowing in places. Ms. Bene captures perfectly the frenetic teeter-totter of desire and fear that Thalia experiences at the hands of "The Guard", as well as the claustrophobic setting in which the novel (novella?) takes place. The reader feels for Thalia, and I myself was easily able to empathize with the terror and the complete lack of emotional and psychological center she felt experiencing this ordeal. Now as far as consent/non-consent - Ms. Bene blurs the line in such a way that I could not help but feel some of the same confusion that Thalia felt. You're right there with her, through it all. Without revealing too much, one of the characters is genuinely terrifying, and is truly the stuff of nightmares.

As for Ms. Bene's writing style - I always found it to be fresh and interesting, and I appreciate the fact that she isn't lazy or repetitive. Even the sex scenes (and oh boy, there are a LOT of them) are different and varied each time. In general, Ms. Bene is one of my favorite erotica writers because she knows what she is doing, and she can actually write, and write well.

As for anyone who might be curious about this work, I would say, go for it and give it a chance! But definitely brace yourself. It's a hell of a ride - and I mean this in the very best possible way.

Do Not Miss This Exceptional Book!

This is an exceptionally well written and totally engaging novel of a woman trapped in a terrifying situation. The fights and struggles Thalia endures, both physically and mentally, are exciting, believable and relatable. As the story progressed I felt closer and closer to Thalia, and more that once yelled "NO!" right along with her.

There is also a gripping subplot with the man who captured Thalia. He is also in an untenable situation, one in which his decisions are not entirely his own.

Security Binds Her is not a BDSM romance. It is a very strong story in which some of the tools and techniques of BDSM are warped and become a means of torture.

This is the first book of a series, but let me assure you that this is a complete novel. Even thought there are questions I hope to have addressed in the next book, Ms Bene was kind enough and talented enough to bring this book to a satisfying conclusion. Please excuse me now while I hurry to go find book two in this series, Striking a Balance.

I hated the Guard

This is my second time reading this book—the first was two days ago, and as soon as I was finished I had to go back to the beginning and start again. It's so dark, and twisted, and full of emotion that I couldn't put it down. I hated the Guard, as we come to know him, wished he'd find his path to redemption, and just plain wished he'd give Thalia her freedom. But then, you also kind of love him for introducing her to this side of herself, circumstances not withstanding.

This book is dark. And I do mean DARK. It opens with a warning, and this warning is well deserved, should any potential readers be faint of heart. But if you want to read about honest characters, a heroine you can really sympathize with—even if you hope to never be in her position—and a villain you love to hate, this book is for you. The ending at first, leaves your heart pumping, ready to tear your hair out... but the more time you have to think about it, the more you just HAVE to know what's going to happen in book 2!! Thalia's story is far from over, and for that, I'm truly grateful.

Taken by surprise

I can't discuss the details of this story here on Amazon: quite simply, it's TOO HOT.

Just generally speaking: it's about a couple who meet on a commuter train and eventually fall in love. Tina Tirrell then describes several of their encounters, one of them public. The fetish du jour is CEI. (If you don't know what that means, read the description on this page carefully.) The story is probably the most sex-heavy work I've read by Ms. Tirrell. After a few introductory pages, we're drenched in sex to the end.

Here's what I can discuss: how much I was taken by surprise by this story. I was *expecting* a simple but fun tale about female dominance, which is what CEI is about, more or less. Well, actually, it's more, and Ms. Tirrell, using straightforward and meaningful prose, explains why in several passages like this: "It was the taste of my excitement, of my obedience to my lover, of my willingness to please a worthy woman, of that mystic fluid I was born with that actually has the power to create new life."

CEI is finally just one expression of a man giving himself over to his lover. Tirrell illustrates in beautifully graphic detail how the most personal and intense sexual experiences -- and the best erotic writing -- come from trust, respect, and empathy.

The writer herself is empathetic to a degree beyond her years, if the (quite lovely) picture of her on her Bio page is any guide. I already knew that Ms. Tirrell was exceptionally good at writing from the male POV. She's written in the voices of callow youth, working stiffs, virginal young men, scientists, professionals, husbands, everyday guys. Despite knowing and having been impressed by this, I was surprised by her gift of the male voice yet again. The nameless narrator's description of events, and his reflections about them, are so naturally done that if I hadn't known who wrote this story, I would have assumed a male author. The "Narrator" is not a woman's fantasy of a man. He's a persuasively real man that many of us can relate to as we follow along on his erotic adventures with his lover. Tirrell's gift is a highly rare one. The only writer in "straight fiction" I can think of who writes "cross-gender" as well as Tina Tirrell is Larry McMurtry (cf. "Terms of Endearment", "Moving On", "Lonesome Dove", and many others). This gift is a sign of an empathetic heart and a highly intelligent mind.

5 out of 5 -- burning-hot erotica that ultimately serves -- beyond any specific fetish -- as a how-to manual for those adventures we call "love affairs".

Very poorly written and confusing

I've read computer science text books and business text books, but this book, which tries to be both is horrible. As a senior in college, I'm sad to say that is this is the worst text book I've ever had to read. After reading several chapters I don't have a grasp on any topic covered thus far, nor do I understand anything the writers are trying to describe. At several points in the book I have had to scratch my head and wonder what the sentence I just read means. I re-read the sentence, and still have no clue.

The book feels bloated with double-speak and over-wordiness in an effort to simply make it longer. My class required the book for assignments, and I only bought the book for that purpose. I'm completing the assignments and never reading this again.

Purchased the Kindle version for $62 which is an outrage. No electronic book should ever cost more than $20 because IT'S JUST BITS. There's no printing, there's no paper, there's no shipping and there's no reason I should have to pay that much.

Too wordy

The author gives way too many examples and takes a long time to get to the point. Because of this it is hard to even know what the point even is! Chapter 8 is 40 pages long. You can learn more from the 2 pages and a half summary in the back of the chapter. I wish I had good examples to give. Here is one (this isn't the best one): on page 262 the author takes a whole page (6 paragraphs) to tell us that a doctor object in his system is both an actor and a class. And that wasn't the main point of the section, the section was supposed to be teaching us that we can find hidden classes in our use cases by looking for "nouns as grammatical objects."

If you have to read this book please read the summaries. They are helpful.

Very wordy, grammatical incoherent, "a pointless or random journey"

I'm trying to get through this books for class, but am getting pretty fed up w the authors' use unnecessary words and improper use of English.

Example: "The road to finding classes is not a clear-cut route with unambiguous signposts. Some points along the road have to be revisited after the first encounter. False steps and blind alleys await us. But it is not a pointless or random journey (Ashrafi 2009. p.261.)." It reads more like a fortune cookie than an academic text.

How this book ever got to be published is beyond comprehension. Or as the authors might have put it: "Reading of this textbook is not expected to be clear-cut and unambiguous. Many paragraphs along the way will need to be revisited many times after the first encounter. But it is indeed a pointless or random journey..."

Sweet and enjoyable

Just looking at the bright, cheery illustrations in this book makes me happy. I was especially pleased with the narrative about how being happy affects the way a person thinks and behaves. I am trying to teach my son that our emotions can affect the quality of the choices we make, and this book makes the point nicely.

This is one of a series of books that features a young bunny and describes feelings in easy, sweet and simple language that kids can relate to. The accompanying illustrations are lovely. My three year old really enjoys reading all the books.

Makes an impact

My little guy is 20 months old. We have 4 of these books..Happy, Sad, Scared, Angry. He loves them and asks for them. I read them to him with alot of drama, so he understands. I describe what the main character is doing and point out everything in the page. There are a few illustrations that he looks for specifically and tells ME what is going on. (Eg. "Mama saying No No No"; He points to the bunny and says "He crying.") Tonight he was upset and whining about all sorts of things (very tired), so we went into his room, shut the door and I attempted to look at a book with him. He actually sought out one on these books. When he found it, he kept repeating something and making a weird noise. I finally found the page he was referring to and could not believe it! There's a page in the story where the main character takes deep breaths to calm down. THIS is what he was doing and saying. "Deep breath" and mimicking what that is!
I'm online tonight looking to see if this author has more books. My little guy has always been very emotional. Looks people in the eyes alot and wants to know where everyone is. At 12 months, my aunt bumped her head when reaching for something under the kitchen table. He patted her head and gave her a hug. He's always been very in-tune with others, which is why I bought these books. They are great!

An extraordinary survey of modernism

Joseph Boone's queer reading of modernism is quite extraordinary, not only in terms of analytical innovation but also in the breadth of his survey. He begins his study in a very unusual place, with Bronte's Villette, and moves all the way to Doris Lessing. As with any good study of modernism, the big names of Joyce, Woolf, and Faulkner are included. It is a strictly English examination, so Proust doesn't appear. While all of his observations on the subject are quite illuminating, I think his most penetrating study is of Djuna Barnes's Nightwood. It is an extremely rich, dense, and difficult text, and I think Mr. Boone should be applauded for his eloquent and insightful handling of such esoteric material. I consider it a must have for any student interested in the study of sexuality in literature.
