About the Author
David W. Carroll received a B. A. in psychology and philosophy from the University of California at Davis (1972) and an M.A. (1973) and Ph.D. (1976) in experimental and developmental psychology from Michigan State University. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Superior since 1976. He is currently is professor of psychology and previously served as chair of the psychology program. Dr. Carroll teaches courses in introductory psychology, psychology of language, cognitive psychology, and child development, and conducts research on discourse comprehension, critical thinking, and the teaching of psychology. He is a member of the Society for Text and Discourse, the Division of Experimental Psychology, the American Psychological Society, the Society for General Psychology, and the Society for Teaching of Psychology.

Well written? Clearly Written?

This book was the most obtuse piece of crap I've ever tried to read--and I'm a philosophy major!
The opacity with which it was written astounded me from cover to cover. The definition section is totally useless; were the definitions clearly presented, one might be able to integrate the information into the chapters and sections,and thereby extract some useful information from the book. As it stands, this is not possible.

Please do not buy this book if you intend to use it as an aid in a psy. of language class.

extremely frustrating

This Kindle version is almost useless as a textbook. There are no location markers. The student has no way to find relevant material except to search page by page, endlessly pushing the forward button.
The figures in the book are not marked or searchable, so they're not available even under a direct know-what-word-you're looking-for search. I saved money by getting theKindle version and I'm very sorry that I did. Studying for exams or just trying to find your place in a previous location is more trouble than it's worth. I usually have to find another student with a printed version of the text to find the information I need. I'm very unhappy with the purchase and will never get a textbook from this company again in a Kindle version.

It's okay, but not what I was looking for. I have an older book, called Accounting for Lawyers which does a great job of teaching the mechanics of basic double-entry accounting. The latter is more of a workbook, and great for even middle school kids -- it's not something useful for lawyers per se.

The current title IS more lawyer focused and performs its task well -- just not what I was looking for.

About the Author
Orkhan Mir-Kasimov is Research Associate at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. He has published widely on Islamic mysticism and messianism, and particularly on aspects of Ḥurūfī thought. Most recently, he edited the volume Unity in Diversity: Mysticism, Messianism and the Construction of Religious Authority in Islam (2013). He has lectured at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and The National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations in Paris.

Mike Carlson founded Applied Reservoir Engineering & Evaluation, Ltd., a petroleum engineering consulting firm specializing in reservoir engineering, numerical simulation, and economic evaluations. He has more than 20 years experience in the petroleum industry, working for such corporations as AMOCO Canada Petroleum Company Ltd. and Canadian Hunter. He has taught various short courses in the use of production and exploitation simulation software for such companies as Scientific Software-Intercomp and McDaniel & Associates Consultants Ltd. Carlson has authored more than 15 different technical papers and is a member of SPE, APEGGA, the Canadian Well Logging Society, the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists. He has served as Technical Program Committee Chairman for the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM), Director of the National Board of the Petroleum Society of CIM, and is on the Industry Advisory Committee for the University of Regina Petroleum Engineering.

Excellent content! About the man who inspired BJJ. Very pleasent and fun to read also.
I would only improve the edition, for instance, sometimes it has missing lines and other small problems.

A fascinating story about a fantastic judoka expert

A fascinating story about a fantastic judoka expert. The book seems to be well researched, but unfortunately the writing is poor and the fictional dialogue is inappropriate for a non-fictional book. The kindle version is disorganized with segments getting mixed, making linear reading difficult. I could not find another kindle book on Mitsuyo Maeda, making this the only one available. Pity. This is an important story of a fighter who made a huge contribution to the origin of Brazilian JiuJitsu and probably to MMA as we know it today.
